Dehydroepiandrosterone: The Key to Eternal Youth?
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) has amazing properties that help people live longer and stay healthier.
Dehydroepiandrosterone: Unraveling the Mystery
Dehydroepiandrosterone is a hormone produced by our body's adrenal gland. It is secreted into our blood stream as a sulfate of dehydroepiandrosterone, where it is then converted into other hormones our body needs.
We don't know a tremendous amount about DHEA and how it works. Complicating the problem, DHEA works differently for men and women, and can also act differently in people of different ages. Some dehydroepiandrosterone supplements have been seen to increase testosterone levels, which might explain why low levels of DHEA exist in the bodies of men suffering from erectile dysfunction. One six month study suggested that 50 mg supplements of dehydroepiandrosterone could improve or even counteract erectile dysfunction in some men.
The Secret to a Better Physique?
There is some suggestion, although studies conflict on this matter, that dehydroepiandrosterone supplements might also lower our body fat while not resulting in weight loss. In one of these studies, interestingly enough, this fat reduction was seen only in males; females did not witness the same effects.
Medical specialists further conjecture that DHEA may affect blood sugar level indirectly, though they are not yet completely convinced.
A Healthier, Richer Life
What dehydroepiandrosterone has been proven to do, however, is increase our body's immunity. In one study a group of senior males who had low DHEA levels received 50 mgs of the supplements daily over a twenty-week period. Their immune functions were significantly improved as a result. Women who suffered from post menopause immunity problems also improved considerably after just three weeks on DHEA.
Dehydroepiandrosterone might also help reduce your risk of heart ailments, possibly because it helps reduce cholesterol - but only if you're a male. Women should actually be concerned that it could cause heart problems rather than combat them.
Additional research will continue to shed light on dehydroepiandrosterone and how it works in the body. Many hold out hope that it will be yet another weapon in our arsenal as we continue to fight aging and help people live longer, healthier lives.
