In Pursuit of Immortality

While we all realize we're not going to achieve immortality, we can still do our best to extend the length of time we spend on this earth and the quality of our life while we're here. Books abound that discuss our quest for immortality, discussing how to stay young and live longer. There are few people who don't take an interest in living as long a life as possible while looking youthful and feeling energetic and healthy. While the quest for immortality through a trek across magic lands in a search of the fountain of youth is but a fairy tale, we can, in reality, take tangible, positive steps toward extending our lifespans through better, more healthful living. Researchers now recognize three common routes to help us come as close to immortality as humanly possible. Nothing radical here: exercise, a diet healthy for your heart and immune system, and reasonable calorie intake. While it won't give us immortality, exercise will keep us healthier than we would be if we lived a sedentary life. Health benefits include better functioning, improved mental outlook and emotional well being, maintenance of a healthy weight, and the postponement or prevention of serious illnesses, such as heart disease and diabetes. A low fat diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables gets us closer to immortality than does the consumption of too many fats and starches. Grains, legumes, nuts and fish are also heart-healthy and immune system-healthy foods, much more so than red meat. Maintaining a low-calorie diet can also help you extend your life by reducing the number of damaging free radicals in your body. These free radicals cause oxidation - like adding rust to your body's pipes - and counteract your fight for immortality. While we all know we can't achieve immortality, our striving for it could lengthen our lives and help us feel better through every stage of life.
