Melatonin: The Miracle Cure?
Many people know of melatonin as a great natural sleep inducer. However, fewer people are aware of melatonin's other important properties that can help you feel better and live longer.
An Insomniac's Dream Supplement
Our body's pineal gland, a tiny little gland at the center of the body's brain, secretes melatonin as our eyes tell our brain that it's getting dark outside. At night this melatonin production makes us sleepy, although melatonin, like many other products our body creates naturally, is produced in less abundance as we age. Which is probably while the elderly sleep less than the young.
Melatonin studies suggest that the supplement will, indeed help us get to sleep. It will also ease the negative effects of jet lag. It has the added benefit of leaving no after effects as compared with sleeping pills sold by prescription.
Other Benefits of Melatonin
Other reported successes for melatonin include a general feeling of well being, strengthening of the body's immune system and reduction of excessive free radicals in our body.
While nothing has been proven yet, current studies are looking at melatonin's use as an antioxidant, to combat cancer and to eliminate mild sleep dysfunctions.
Taking Melatonin to Promote Good Health
The appropriate dose of melatonin varies considerably from one person to the next. Tablets generally are 1.5 to 3 mg each. It's generally best to start with one tablet at night, and then increase the dosage as needed until the treatment is effective.
Melatonin side effects are not serious, nor prevalent. According to one study, 10 percent of folks who tried melatonin said it did not help them get to sleep. Another ten percent of melatonin users said they had nightmares, headaches, some slight grogginess in the morning, decrease in their sex drive and depression, though mild.
